Seawolves Sign Ronan Foley to Round out Back Row
TUKWILA, WA – The Seawolves have secured Ronan Foley from the Toronto Arrows for the 2023 Season.
Foley was a late-season MLR signee for the Toronto Arrows in 2021, who produced several strong performances in his short first season, racking up 27 tackles (90% completion), 129 carry meters on 21 carries, 47 ruck arrivals, four tackle breaks, four lineout takes, and a breakdown steal. In 2022, he finished #1 in the MLR for the #8 position in run meters, meters gained, tackles made, and clean breaks, and was voted 2022 Player of the Year by the Toronto Arrows.
Originally from Ireland, Foley first joined the Arrows after playing with his hometown club University College Dublin of the All-Ireland League. The loose forward started with UCD’s U20 program in 2016 and was promoted to the senior side as an under-ager one year later.
Awarded the Club Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season in 2017-2018, Foley captained UCD in the club’s pandemic-shortened 2020-2021 season. Foley represented Ireland at the 2018 Six Nations U20s Championship, has featured for Leinster ‘A’, and earned one cap with Leinster’s senior side in 2019.
“When Andrew Durutalo decided to retire, I was excited at the opportunity to recruit someone of Ronan’s caliber. His positional stats for MLR 2022 are standout – he adds significant quality to our forward unit with the ability to play across the back row.
Importantly he’s young, ambitious to improve and is a fantastic individual. We’re delighted to welcome Ronan to the Seawolves for the 2023 season,” said Coach Clarke.
“I’m excited and honored to have joined the Seawolves. This is a club with great pedigree in Major League Rugby, and to have been given the opportunity to play in Seattle is a real honor for me. I can’t wait to meet the team and get straight to work on going one step further with the Seawolves in 2023. Last season I experienced Seattle fans first hand, and I can’t wait to show the best fans in the league what I can do,” Foley said.
