Seattle Seawolves vs Houston SaberCats – 3/22 Post-Match Summary
In a rematch of the 2023 playoff match where your Seawolves defeated the Houston SaberCats, and the only remaining undefeated teams of the young 2024 MLR campaign, we suffered our first loss of the season.
Coach Allen Clarkes Seawolves lineup showed significant team depth in our ability to suit up a formidable starting squad after losing many starting players during the first three weeks of the season. We were without Captain Riekert Hattingh, hooker Pete Malcolm and the magic of try scorer Toni Pulu.
The Seawolves scored the first points on the board from the boot of Mack Mason, however were trailing at the halftime mark to Houston who led 23-8.
The second half was marked by a relentless effort by the Seawolves as they fought back and answered every opposing attack with one of their own – scoring 5 tries in the second half. Their dominant second half adding two bonus points to our seasons tally; 1 for scoring 4 tries or more in a match and 1 for losing by less than 7 points.
Unfortunately, the Seawolves did come up short, losing to Houston in the 81st minute 42 – 40.
Close to 3000 people turned out for this showdown and were treated to a variety of cuisines from around the globe to honor the international and global impact of rugby.
The players came dressed in wear that gave a nod to their home countries.
Fans were on their feet for most of the match, including to cheer on the halftime show which was a combination of three Polynesian dance numbers by Nyoka’s Elite Polynesian Dance school.
The Seawolves now focus on heading back out on the road to play Chicago Hounds at SeatGeek stadium on 3/30 at 3pm PT – watch live on Root Sports, Root Sports plus and The Rugby Network. Or join the organization and their passionate fans at this weeks Official Away Match viewing party at Wingdome in Kirkland from 2.30pm PT.
