Seattle Locks in Lions’ Rhyno Herbst for 2021
TUKWILA, WASHINGTON (February 11, 2021) – The Seattle Seawolves have signed Rhyno Herbst for the 2021 Major League Rugby (MLR) season. Making the move from Super Rugby to Major League Rugby, Herbst joins the Seawolves for his debut in the North American league ahead of its fourth season.
Herbst has developed his trade in his home country, starting in 2012 by spending his youth playing days with the Golden Lions. His progress continued as
the teams of the Golden Lions Rugby Union provided him with more and more pathway opportunities. In 2015, he suited up the Lions’ U19 squad and after
a year, he made the jump to their U21’s. 2016 also saw him join in the Junior Boks training squad. Consistent play from the young Lock earned selection
to his University of the Witwatersrand Varsity Cup team in 2017. And with a strong showing during that tournament, Herbst was brought into the senior
side for Currie Cup competition and debuted professionally against the Pumas. In 2018, he added the final piece to the pathway puzzle with selection
to the Lions’ Super Rugby team. Herbst toggled between the two competitions in 2019 and 2020 ahead of his decision to sign with a new club and to head
to another country.
