TUKWILA, WA — The road to the Major League Rugby Championship now runs through Seattle.
On a night that celebrated inclusivity, community, and rugby's ability to bring people together, the Seattle Seawolves delivered one of their biggest performances of the season, defeating the California Legion and securing a home Semifinal in front of one of the largest and loudest crowds of the year.
Pride Night, presented by Experience Tukwila, has become one of the most anticipated events on the Seawolves calendar, and Sunday's match delivered both on and off the pitch.
Long before kickoff, supporters filled Starfire Stadium as Pride Night festivities got underway. Fans visited the 360-degree photo booth, created signs at the poster-making station, connected with community organizations, and celebrated the inclusive spirit that has long been at the heart of rugby culture. Members of the Seattle Quake Rugby Football Club also took the pitch prior to the match, helping set the tone for an evening centered around community, belonging, and pride.
As kickoff approached, the atmosphere continued to build.
The stakes could not have been higher.
Entering the final weekend of the regular season, Seattle trailed California by two points in the standings. A victory would secure a home playoff match. A loss would send the Seawolves on the road for the postseason.
The playoff atmosphere was evident from the opening whistle.
California controlled possession and territory through much of the opening ten minutes and capitalized while Seattle was reduced to fourteen players following a yellow card. For a brief moment, momentum belonged entirely to the visitors.
The response from Seattle would ultimately define the night.
On their first visit inside the California 22, the Seawolves turned pressure into points and immediately swung momentum back in their favor. With every tackle and carry, the noise from the stands grew louder as the home side began to establish itself physically.
By the midway point of the first half, the forward pack had begun laying the foundation for what would become one of Seattle's most complete performances of the season. The scrum generated pressure, the defense tightened, and the Seawolves started turning opportunities into points.
By halftime, Seattle had built a 21-12 lead.
Head Coach Allen Clarke reflected on what the result meant for everyone associated with the club.
"I'm really pleased for everyone associated with the club, the players obviously and how they represented the team tonight. And for everyone who supported us when we'd lost three in a row in rounds two, three and four, and the way they backed us to get to this point."
The opening stages of the second half would ultimately decide the match.
Seattle emerged from the break with clear intent and immediately put California under pressure. The Seawolves secured their fourth try and the crucial bonus point by the 45th minute, opening the floodgates and sending Starfire Stadium into celebration.
The forwards continued to dominate the contest.
TV Man of the Match Mason Pedersen delivered a tireless performance that included eighteen tackles, repeated scrum dominance, and a try of his own. Following the match, Pedersen was quick to shift the spotlight toward his teammates.
"All credit to the boys. We had to put a performance together tonight to secure a home semi-final, and we did. So all credit to them, and we just keep going."
Behind that effort, Seattle's defense took complete control.
Known affectionately by supporters as the "Sea Wall," the Seawolves repeatedly shut down California attacks and prevented the Legion from earning valuable bonus points. Every defensive stand brought another roar from the crowd. Every turnover pushed Seattle closer to its goal.
The atmosphere inside Starfire Stadium reflected the significance of the occasion. What began as a celebration of Pride Night transformed into a playoff atmosphere as supporters recognized the opportunity unfolding in front of them.
When the final whistle sounded, players and fans celebrated together knowing what had been accomplished.
The Seawolves had secured a home Semifinal.
The celebration was short-lived.
Waiting on the other side is the very same opponent.
For the second consecutive week, the California Legion will travel to Starfire Stadium as the two clubs meet again with a place in the Major League Rugby Championship on the line.
Clarke knows the challenge ahead and hopes the Seattle faithful will once again make the difference.
"To keep California to three tries is not an easy task. They play really good rugby, and it's going to be a wonderful semi-final here next week. I just want our fans to come back, get behind the team, and pack this house out."
On Sunday night, Pride Night showcased everything that makes Seattle rugby special. A passionate community. An electric atmosphere. A commitment to inclusion. And a team capable of rising to the occasion when the moment matters most.
Now the focus shifts to the postseason.
