Phil Mack and Seattle Seawolves nominated for MTR Western 2018 Sports Star of the Year Awards
SEATTLE, Jan 7, 2019 – Seattle Seawolves Scrum Half Phil Mack has been nominated for Male Sports Star of the Year at the annual MTR Western 2018 Sports Star of the Year Awards, while the Seattle Seawolves are also up for Sports Story of the Year. Now it is time for the fans to choose the winners.
Male Sports Star of the Year –
Phil Mack led the Seattle Seawolves to a championship for the inaugural 2018 Major League Rugby season becoming one of the few people in US history to
win a championship joining other player-coach legends Bill Russell and Curly Lambeau.
He led the Seawolves to an 8-2 record and the league championship, upsetting top-seeded Glendale in the title game, and was named to the All-MLR first team .
He has represented his Country in International play with over 100 matches and will represent Canada in the upcoming 2019 World Cup in Japan.Phil, a member
of the Toquaht First Nation, is actively involved in supporting youth rugby through his involvement in Thunder Rugby, an Aboriginal rugby program.
Sports Story of the Year –
The Seattle Seawolves brought professional rugby to Seattle in a big way.
In the inaugural 2018 Major League Rugby season, they led the league both on and off the field.They sold out all matches at Starfire Stadium, led the
league in TV viewership on both CBS and Root Sports Networks, and were touted as a model franchise for the league.
Player-coach Phil Mack led the team from behind in the 2nd half of the Championship with an upset win over top-seeded Glendale to bring home the inaugural Championship Shield to Seattle.
The Seattle Sports Commission’s 84th Annual Awards Event will take place February 7 at the Sheraton Grand Seattle.
