Eagle Scrum Half Devereaux Ferris Eager for Seattle Opportunity
TUKWILA, WASHINGTON (January 12, 2021) – The Seattle Seawolves have signed Devereaux Ferris for the 2021 Major League Rugby season. Originally from Beach Haven, New Zealand Ferris joins the Seawolves after two Major League Rugby (MLR) seasons with San Diego Legion (2019-20).
Ferris grew up in his home country of New Zealand and naturally picked up a rugby ball at a young age. He started to get more serious about the game as
he grew up and played for Northland’s U18, U20, and Academy programs from 2011-2013 before coming to the United States. After playing club rugby in
California for a season with the Old Aztecs, Ferris decided to move permanently and joined Life West Rugby.
He helped Life West clinch a DII National Championship in 2016 and continued to contribute to the program as their Captain from 2017-2018, Player
of the year in 2018, and awarded the 2018 Pacific Rugby Premiership MVP. Success on the club rugby scene caught National Team selectors’ attention
and Ferris suited up for the USA Selects, and then the Eagles for the 2018 Americas Rugby Championship. He debuted against Samoa in San Sebastian, Spain and became USA Eagle #528 with his first international cap. The
scrumhalf’s MLR career started in 2019 with Seattle’s west coast rival, the San Diego Legion. In 2020, Ferris earned more starting opportunities with
Legion and he earned Week 3 League accolades, selected to the Team of the Week.
The USA Eagle is looking forward to playing a style of rugby under head coach Kees Lensing and player-coach Mat Turner. “There is a strong family feel to the team and the connection with the fans and community is evident,” said Ferris. “After speaking with the coaches and a few of the boys, I felt there is a big opportunity to add value to the team, so from the outset things just felt right. The challenge to get better and work with the caliber of coaches and players in Seattle was too good to pass up.”
Ferris’ decision making, experience, and skillset makes him a threat in the important scrumhalf role. Check out his highlights here. The 2021 season is set to kick off March 20, 2021 with the Seawolves on the road to Austin for the opening weekend. 2021 season ticket memberships are on sale and can be purchased here.
