Seattle, Wash. – The Seattle Seawolves have signed former Cardiff Blues strength coach, Chris Tombs, as the strength and conditioning coach ahead of the 2020 season.
“The strength and conditioning coach is the cornerstone of any professional sports team,” said head coach Kees Lensing. “Chris has a lot of experience
and energy and I am excited to see him bring the best out of our players.”
Tombs comes from a strong sporting background with over 20 years of strength and conditioning experience. The current United Kingdom Strength and Conditioning
Association (UKSCA) board member began his coaching track with England Rugby’s women’s program in 2000. Tombs shifted to the Leicester Tigers’ academy
side in 2002 and added cricket to his responsibilities with the Leicestershire Foxes in 2003. One of his biggest moves followed suit with a senior
strength and conditioning coach role with the Cardiff Blues for nine years.
Eventually another rugby opportunity in the United States brought Tombs to Seattle and became Atavus Rugby’s high-performance director, heading up the
Atavus Academy program with multiple elite athletes, and consulted the USA Rugby women’s fifteens program in their World Cup year. After a few successful
years away from home, Tombs returned to the United Kingdom to switch codes back to cricket with the Northamptonshire Country Cricket Club who became
the Twenty20 Blast Champions in 2016, Welsh National Cup winners in 2018, and the Welsh Premiership Champions in 2018 and 19.
“I’m excited to be returning to Seattle and building on the excellent work that the Seattle Seawolves have done in the first
two seasons of Major League Rugby,” said Tombs. “It’s a fantastic challenge to join the current champions and add an added layer of impact as the leadership
group focuses on retaining the title and improving rugby both at the top level and through the community of rugby fans in Seattle. Starfire has fond
memories for me and I’m looking forward to seeing it full for every home game.”
The third Major League Rugby season will kick off in February of 2020. Seawolves season tickets are on sale now and can be purchased at www.seattleseawolves.com .
